Deliver new app insights

An overview about my work at App Annie

ABOUT MY ROLE

App Annie delivers the most trusted app data and insights for business to succeed in the app economy globally. Over 500,000 registered members managing 1 million apps rely on App Annie to better understand the app market, their business and the opportunities around them.

As an end-to-end designer, I worked on every aspect of the product development process, from brainstorming the new product initiatives to tweaking design pixels for implementation. I worked closely with PMs, researchers, data scientists, engineers, and product marketers in an agile development environment, and facilitate varied team leaders to launch new products and features aligning with the business goals. My works also include knowing user behavior by analyzing our platform usage data and assisting product marketing to convert users to power users.

OVERVIEW

Provide new data and reports

Software Development Kit (SDK) Data

We want to target a new audience – SDK publisher and provide a couple of unique uses cases with our new data for app professionals. I started by understanding what SDK really means to users and created the report design allowing users to identify high-quality SDK for boosting their app development strategy.

Paid v.s. Organic Downloads

This new report allows business users to understand their advertising strategy based on the number of paid vs. organic app’s downloads attribution. I started from information architecture perspective and came up with two different solutions: Dimensional design and Metric design. Then, I collaborated with UX researchers to find out the best solution which balances implementation costs and users understanding.

Mobile Web

Providing app data is not enough for our business users, so we decided to expand our data coverage to the whole mobile market landscape. Since the mobile web is a new business for the company, I needed to discuss with product managers and data scientist what insights our business users might care about and what data we can provide. Once the scope was finalized, I transferred the data idea to simple report interface.

City Insight Report

In addition to demographic data, we want to add a new perspective – geolocation for our business users to get a deeper understanding of their app users. This project focuses on how users interact with the city selector and whether they can quickly compare the app’s performance across the different metropolis.

Transfer complexity into actionable insights

Data Visualization & Donut Chart

Instead of always displaying simple line/bar chart and table, we want to give users another quick or insightful ways to consume data. I created varied chart types with real data input and discussed the proposal with CSMs,  PMs, Engineers, and other UX team members. I  then delivered donut chart visual component to provide a new visualization way for implementation.

Deliver new opportunities and surface threats

Slack Integration

We received feedback from ur tech-savvy users that they would like to receive real-time alerts through their Slack channel, so I built the integration flow and used the Slack emulator to deliver the look of the Slack message for supporting this required use case.

Alert Configuration Improvement

The alert feature was shipped at the end of last year for our business users to get timely alerts about changes to specific apps or markets delivered to different channels. However, the alert creation rate is pretty low because users cannot easily finish the setup process. I found out the pain point and redesigned the flow to improve conversion rate.

Teach users everything they need to know

WalkMe
A centralized educational portal

App Annie platform has an issue with educational resources scattered around, and our business users cannot find the help efficiently. I implemented a centralized portal by using WalkMe and redesigned the tutorial menu for users to adopt App Annie platform with ease.

New User On-boarding

In order to increase our new user retention rate, the UX team followed Google’s design sprint to held a 5-days workshop go through problems and solutions. I delivered an action-oriented, not instructive prototype and collaborated with the UX researcher to conduct user testings with the comparison of another on-boarding wizard solution.

Standardize design patterns to sustain consistency

SuperGrid – Design Language System

In the past, the dev team built each report from scratch. Now we started thinking from the platform perspective and announced App Annie’s design language system to improve product usability, learnability, appearance, and efficiency. I collaborated with our design system designer and provided requests from feature needed perspective so that we can build generic components which fit most of the use cases.
